Representing Clients in Washington, DC

The Lippes Mathias Lobbying & Public Policy Team has extensive experience representing public and private sector entities and Native American Tribes before the United States Congress and the Administration. Our Washington-based team of attorneys and professionals has significant, established relationships on both sides of the political aisle with senior members of congress, key congressional staff, and senior Administration and Executive Branch Agency officials, both political appointees and long-serving career staff. These relationships, coupled with our substantive understanding of client issues and our strategic approach, have allowed us to become trusted advisors and effective advocates for our clients.  Our team has a track record of success in advocating for and against congressional and administrative action that would have an impact upon our clients.

Our team’s effectiveness comes from our comprehensive approach to solving our clients’ challenges and meeting our clients’ objectives, which necessarily starts with a careful evaluation and thorough understanding of our clients’ needs, whether policy, business or legal.  From there we work with our clients to develop a strategy that includes identifying and assessing relevant legal and policy issues; determining how best to frame our clients’ goals; identifying the critical decision-makers; and conducting the necessary outreach at the federal, state and local levels, as needed. Further, our years of experience advocating for our clients in Washington has confirmed that there is strength in numbers, and we therefore look for opportunities to work with our clients’ trade organizations and similarly situated entities to ensure that approaches are coordinated and messages are consistent.  In addition, when necessary or advantageous to our clients’ efforts, we assemble and partner with other professionals (e.g., media relations specialists, public opinion polling organizations, grass roots consultants and other outside experts) for maximum effectiveness.

Our services in this area include:

  • Drafting legislation and materials in support of legislation, including congressional testimony
  • Monitoring legislative activity and advising clients regarding congressional strategy
  • Advocacy on behalf of clients before Congress and the Administration
  • Strategic planning with clients to achieve their objectives
  • Analysis of regulations, drafting of comments during rulemaking process

The team, anchored by a former counselor to the Secretary of the Department of the Interior, includes a former New York State Attorney General, a former magistrate judge, and two former U.S. Assistant United States Attorneys, has the relationships and policy, legal, and regulatory experience and expertise to effectively advocate for our clients. In addition, as part of a full-service law firm, our public law and policy professionals team with, and benefit from, the substantive knowledge and experience of our firm’s attorneys who regularly assist clients with many of the topics/issues that we lobby on for our clients in Washington. Our legal knowledge and experience in the areas of energy and environment, banking and financial transactions, transportation, immigration, bankruptcy, health care, labor and employment, real estate, intellectual property, federal Indian and gaming law, and technology and life sciences provide us with a clear advantage over traditional Washington DC lobbying practices when serving our clients, including ensuring that our clients who are seeking federal determinations from Administrative agencies have an adequate record to support or withstand a potential subsequent legal challenge.
