On Tuesday, June 11, Lippes Mathias immigration practice team partners Eileen M. Martin and Elizabeth M. Klarin delivered a webinar presentation hosted by the Greater Toronto Area Accountants & Finance Network titled Considerations When Crossing the Border & How to Obtain Work Authorization. During the presentation, Martin and Klarin provided information on steps employers must take when they send their employees to the U.S. or when their workers must enter the U.S. The goal of the presentation was to prepare attendees to:
- Assess Business Visitor activity for purposes of entry to the U.S.;
- Determine the activities and circumstances that require U.S. work;
- Identify several types of U.S. work permits that may apply; and,
- Learn about other areas of law that are related to foreign nationals working in the U.S.
About Eileen M. Martin
Eileen M. Martin, a partner with Lippes Mathias and the firm’s immigration practice team co-leader, has over 25 years of experience in immigration law assisting clients from around the world with various matters, including work permits, employment-based immigration, port-of-entry issues, visa issuance, family-based immigration, immigrant and nonimmigrant waivers, and assessment of U.S. citizenship.
Before entering private practice, Martin was employed with the former U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, where she performed adjudications in the Buffalo District Office and inspections at the Niagara Falls and Toronto ports of entry. She also served as a visa officer with the Canadian Consulate General in Buffalo. Additionally, Martin has completed the Immigration Officer Basic Training Course at the Federal Law Enforcement Center.
About Elizabeth M. Klarin
Elizabeth M. Klarin has more than 15 years of experience in immigration, including several years working with one of the world’s leading immigration law firms. She assists clients with the full spectrum of U.S. immigration matters, including visas and immigrant permissions for extraordinary ability, specialty occupation, intracompany transferee, athletic, business visitor, and USMCA-eligible individuals, as well as family and employment-based permanent residence. She represents clients from around the globe across virtually every industry, as well as individuals seeking strategic immigration options and solutions.
Klarin works closely with cross-border Canadian and international clients to help them obtain work authorization and address visa, border, preclearance, and other entry issues and facilitates both frequent and infrequent movement to and from the U.S. for business or pleasure. An avid sports fan, Klarin also represents several teams and individual athletes in the areas of lacrosse, hockey, football, and equestrian, obtaining status as an international athlete, coach, and staff.
Klarin is also a member of the firm’s Cannabis Practice Group and is at the forefront of advising clients involved in the business of cannabis, and those encountering personal use issues, regarding risks, restrictions and solutions to enable continued entrance into and activity within the U.S.
