Hon. Carol E. Heckman (Ret.) to Serve as Panelist at the American Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section’s 2023 Arbitration Training Institute

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Hon. Carol E. Heckman (Ret.), Lippes Mathias partner and alternative dispute resolution practice team leader, will be a panelist at the American Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section’s 2023 Arbitration Training Institute. The two-day comprehensive training in advanced arbitration skills will take place on March 9-10 in New York, N.Y. and will feature nationally recognized experts in the field.
Judge Heckman's panel presentation, entitled “The Award and Post-Award Issues,” will address the best ways to prepare an award, including dissents, independent research, panel dynamics, post-hearing briefing, attorneys’ fees, confirmation and vacatur of awards and other subjects. The session is scheduled for Friday, March 10. She will be joined in the panel presentation by James Reiman of Reiman ADR.
With more than 40 years of experience as a trial lawyer and judge, Judge Heckman (Ret.) has an active practice as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and on a private basis. She conducts arbitrations in most major metropolitan areas with a particular concentration in New York City. In addition to arbitrations and mediations, Judge Heckman serves as co-chair of the Education Committee of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, an exclusive group of commercial arbitrators representing the best in the United States. Judge Heckman also engages in litigation counseling and trial work for American Indian tribes and a group of business clients, providing representation in government investigations, complex commercial matters, taxation, and gaming. She has tried numerous cases as a lawyer, a judge, and an arbitrator in a broad range of disputes.
Judge Heckman served as a Magistrate Judge in the Western District of New York for eight years where she was selected to sit on the Federal Judicial Conference’s Education Committee for Magistrate Judges and served as an Officer in the Federal Magistrate Judges Association. She has also served as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Buffalo, New York, and as a law clerk for Hon. John T. Curtin, former Chief Judge of the Western District of New York.
About the 2023 Arbitration Training Institute
The 2023 Arbitration Training Institute will feature sessions on every stage of the arbitration process examined from the vantage point of neutrals, advocates, and in-house counsel. Plenary sessions will be coupled with small group break-out discussions to enhance learning and interaction with faculty and colleagues.
