Lippes Mathias is pleased to announce that partners Ian A. Shavitz and Matt Ferguson, members of the firm’s environment & energy and Indian law practice teams, will be featured speakers at The Indian Gaming Association's Mid-Year Conference & Expo, taking place from September 16-18, 2024, at the Tulalip Resort Casino in Tulalip, Washington. 

Ian A. Shavitz will participate in the panel discussion, Green Energy Financing: Opportunities for Native American Tribes. This session will explore the growing landscape of financial resources available to Native American tribes for developing renewable energy projects. Participants will learn about federal and state grants, tax incentives, private investment opportunities, and innovative financing models tailored to tribal communities. The discussion will provide a deeper understanding of how tribes can access these resources to build a sustainable energy future, create economic opportunities, and strengthen tribal sovereignty. 

Matt Ferguson will present on the panel titled Future of Energy: Innovations and Emerging Technologies. This session will focus on the cutting-edge advancements shaping the future of energy production, distribution, and consumption. Topics will include renewable energy sources, energy storage solutions, smart grids, and other emerging technologies that are transforming the industry. The session will also examine the broader impact of these innovations on the environment, economy, and society. 

About Ian A. Shavitz 

Ian A. Shavitz is the team leader of Lippes Mathias' Environment and Energy practice team and has more than 20 years of experience counseling and advocating for clients on environmental and land use issues associated with developing large-scale infrastructure, energy, and commercial projects. He also advises on securing federal, state, and local governmental permits and approvals and has extensive experience in environmental issues related to corporate, real estate, and energy transactions. Shavitz’s clients include corporations, municipalities, developers, investors, private equity funds, and Indian tribes. Before joining Lippes Mathias, Shavitz practiced at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP in Washington, D.C. 

About Matt Ferguson 

Matt Ferguson has over two decades of experience providing legal counsel to clients on a broad range of corporate, project finance, governance, and tax issues. His practice includes advising on transactions, development, and financing of renewable energy projects, corporate tax issues, and general corporate law matters. Ferguson also brings significant expertise in advising Indian Tribes on economic development and investment matters, having previously served as Senior Advisor with the U.S. Department of Energy, where he led the implementation of an energy infrastructure credit program for Tribal Nations.
